Role Overview

As a Student Support Officer, you will be the first point of contact for students requiring assistance, providing comprehensive support that promotes their academic and personal development. You will work closely with academic staff, external agencies, and families to ensure students receive the necessary guidance and resources to thrive in their studies and beyond.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide timely and effective support to students, addressing academic, welfare, and personal issues.
  • Act as a liaison between students, teaching staff, and external support services, ensuring clear communication and coordinated assistance.
  • Maintain accurate student records, monitoring attendance, progress and engagement.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of support plans tailored to individual student needs.
  • Deliver workshops and one-to-one sessions on study skills, time management, and wellbeing.
  • Contribute to safeguarding procedures, reporting concerns promptly and appropriately.
  • Support students with additional learning needs and liaise with specialist services as required.
  • Participate in team meetings and training to continually enhance the student support service.

Person Specification

  • Experience working in a student support, pastoral, or educational advisory role ideally within Further or Higher Education.
  • Strong understanding of student welfare, safeguarding, and inclusion.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with young people and colleagues.
  • Organised and able to manage a varied workload, prioritising tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Empathetic and approachable, with a genuine passion for supporting students’ success.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Proficient in using IT systems for record-keeping and communication.
  • Relevant qualifications in education, counselling, or a related field would be advantageous.
